Benefit Trust Information

The Benefit Trust is a program that provides benefits to our members. Our program supplies the BCT members with vision, dental and life insurance policies. The BCT appointed trustees have the power to purchase insurance and provide employee benefits using the funds provided by the school district. This practice usually provides superior benefits to all members from employer operated programs. As of July 1, 2001, our local has negotiated such a program. Please Email Pete Michels at pmichels@bethpage.ws or call the Benefit Trust Office on (516) 931-3204 with questions about your benefits or to update your personal information such as dependents, beneficiaries, etc. Our trustees are pictured below.

Frequently Asked Question's about the Benefit Trust:

Question: What is the Benefit Trust?
Answer: The Trust is separate from the union itself. It's purpose is to purchase and maintain our vision, dental, and life insurance policies. Presently, the union appointed trustees are listed and pictured above.

Question: How does the Benefit Trust work?
Answer: According to our contract, the district has agreed to contribute a sum of money to the fund, currently $100 per month per full time teacher. A Declaration of Trust has been prepared which governs the fund. The five Trustees (pictured above) work together with an accountant and an attorney to meet all legal requirements.

Question: Why do we need the Benefit Trust?
Answer: In addition to providing superior benefits, the trustees are able to shop for the programs and negotiate directly with insurance carriers. Trustees have the power to change benefits without waiting for the contract to expire. Additionally, benefits can be tailored to the specific needs of the teachers in the local.

Question: Is NYSUT involved?
Answer: Yes. NYSUT has provided a tremendous amount of assistance and guidance in completing the legal requirements for setting up the fund. NYSUT has afforded our trustees the opportunity to participate in its Benefit Conference in Albany. NYSUT will continue to provide support services to our fund.

Question: Where can I get dental, vision and Out-of-Pocket forms? What about problems or concerns that may arise?
Answer: Dental and "Out-of-Pocket" forms are now available by clicking here or in the BCT office. Vision forms are not needed unless you go to a doctor who is "out of network". These forms are only available in the union office. You can contact any of the trustees or the office manager with your concerns.
